Activities For Senior Citizens in a Nursing Home

There are many activities for a senior citizen at a nursing home to partake in. Whether the resident is physically active or prefers lounging around, there is something fun for everywhere at the facility.

It is just a myth that senior citizens solely enjoy spending time in their rooms watching television. Residents in a nursing home can enjoy many fun activities planned by the staff. It is important for the faculty to understand the condition of the residents before planning specific activities.

Photography: Photography is a wonderful activity for senior citizens. You can take the residents on a walk if they are feeling up to it, or take them on a bus ride tour to see beautiful scenery in your area. The home residents may ask the faculty to print out their photos to hang on their wall or to scrap-book.

Scrap-booking: People who live in assisted living homes have very creative minds. Print out pictures of their photography and family to make a beautiful scrapbook of things that they enjoy. Stickers and colorful paper will help to make the scrap-book personalized and interesting.

Bingo: Bingo and other board games are fun activities for senior citizens. Get groups together for some competitive but fun games. If the faculty has prizes for the home residents it may make this activity even more fun.

Swimming: If the residents feel up to it, they may be interested in swimming and a few other physical, but not too intense activities. Swimming is great for one’s arthritis and keeping the heart healthy.

Concerts: If there are several musically inclined residents at the facility, the assisted living home may be able to entertain the idea of a concert right at the facility. Get a few people who know how to play the saxophone, flute, trumpet and piano. These instruments together will create wonderful music.

Journaling: Journaling is a great activity for senior citizens to do. Keeping track of their daily activities and journaling their thoughts is a great way to keep them busy will in the assisted living facility.

Cooking: Many people enjoy cooking and baking and participate in this activity as a hobby. Cooking meals for other residents and themselves will keep everyone involved.

Jewelry Making: If the residents have a creative mind, jewelry making is one activity that they can greatly enjoy. Making necklaces, bracelets and earrings for themselves and others is a neat way to express their creativity. Giving the residents many options of beads and wire is helpful so they can fully express themselves.

With help from the faculty, assisted living centers can be made fun for senior citizens. Games, delicious meals and other fun activities will make a nursing home feel like home. If you have extra time in your schedule, volunteer at a nursing home to deliver cookies or simply chat with the residents.
